Mathematics

The Maths department at North Shore Academy constantly strives to improve the lives of the pupils that pass through it. Our core aim is to provide pupils with all of the skills that they need to be contributing citizens; adding value to their own lives and society as a whole.

Curriculum

At North Shore Academy we have a rolling curriculum, which takes into account both pupils starting points and their potential. Rather than teach given topics in each year group, pupils will access materials that will constantly challenge them and push them to improve both their knowledge and understanding of mathematics. The schemes of work are progressive and allow pupils to access a mixture of the four strands of mathematics at all stages:

Statistics

Number

Algebra

At key stage 4, all pupils will sit a mathematics GCSE. In addition pupils have the opportunity to opt for an additional GCSE in statistics in Year 9.

Y9 Term 3: Probability, scatter graphs, standard form, transformations, constructions and loci, 2D representations of 3D shapes

Y10 Term 1: calculating with percentages, measures, surds, statistical measures, indices, properties of polygons

Y10 Term 2 Number, congruence and similarity, Pythagoras and trigonometry, simultaneous equations, probability, statistics

Y10 Term 3: quadratic equations, rearranging formulae, volume, algebra, sketching graphs, linear and quadratic equations graphically, Geometry and measures recap.


Y11 Term 1: Further quadratics and formulae identities, trigonometry, growth and decay, equation of a circle, further equations and graphs, direct and inverse proportion

Y11 Term 2: inequalities, vectors, graphs (revision), Sine and Cosine rules, transforming functions, numerical methods, Circle Theorems.

Y11 Term 3: Gradients and rate of change, pre-calculus and area under a curve, algebraic functions, revision.

Y7 Term 1: Numbers and the number system, calculating, division, visualising and constructing, investigating shape properties, algebraic proficiency: using formulae

Y7 Term 2: Exploring and calculating with fractions decimals and percentages, proportional reasoning, pattern identification, measuring space, investigating angles
